Antonio Conte sends warning to new Chelsea signing
The Chelsea manager wants to see Alvaro Morata improve his goal record at Stamford Bridge following his big-money move
Antonio Conte has warned Alvaro Morata that he will want to improve his goal record following his move to Chelsea.
The Spain international completed a move to the Premier League champions in a reported £58m deal from Real Madrid last week.
Morata will be tasked with replicating the success of Diego Costa at Stamford Bridge as the Blues look to sell the 28-year-old this summer.
The former Juventus star spent most of the 2016-17 season as an impact player at Real Madrid despite sealing a return to The Bernabeu in a £75m deal.
Morata still managed to score 20 times in 43 appearances in all competitions despite being largely used as an impact player from the bench.
However, Chelsea manager Conte is clearly hoping for more from his summer signing after the Italian coach challenged the striker to improve his goal record next term.
“Last season he didn’t play a lot of games but scored 20 goals,” Conte said at a media conference on Sunday.
“He is very young and has a lot of space and room to improve and I want to improve him a lot.”
Chelsea finished seven points clear of their closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the title race last season.
The Blues won the Premier League title with two games to spare to secure the top-flight crown in Conte’s first season in charge.
