Chelsea could switch their focus to former Liverpool striker Christian Benteke, according to reports in the England media.

The Daily Telegraph is reporting that the Premier League champions are being forced to look at alternative targets after Manchester United edged in front of Chelsea in the race to sign Romelu Lukaku.

The west London side were thought to be favourites to sign the Belgium international but now Lukaku is being tipped to complete a move to the Red Devils ahead of the start of their pre-season tour in Los Angeles.

According to the same article, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is a big admirer of Crystal Palace’s Benteke after the Belgian forward scored in the Eagles’ 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge back in April.

However, the Italian coach is thought to be eager to sign a striker of greater pedigree before turning to the 26-year-old to bolster his attacking options ahead of the defence of their Premier League crown.

Benteke moved to Liverpool in a £32.5m deal from Aston Villa in the 2015 summer transfer window but last one season at Anfield before Jurgen Klopp sold the towering striker to Palace.
