Chelsea reassured signing top 24-year-old striker will make up for Romelu Lukaku setback
Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol believes Chelsea signing Alvaro Morata would leave the champions in a good position despite missing out on Romelu Lukaku
Chelsea will be in a decent position if Antonio Conte signs Alvaro Morata despite missing out on Romelu Lukaku, according to Steve Nicol.
The Premier League champions missed out on signing the Belgium international despite previously being favourites to re-sign the 24-year-old.
Indeed, Manchester United ended their pursuit of Morata to focus their energy on beating their bitter rivals to the signing of the Everton star in the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils confirmed that they have agreed a £75m deal with Everton for the proven Premier League striker’s signature, with his agent Mino Raiola having close ties to Old Trafford.
Reports in Spain suggest Chelsea could now turn their attention to Morata should Lukaku complete a big-money move to Manchester United.
Conte was heavily linked with a move to sign Morata last summer but stuck with controversial Spain striker Diego Costa.
And former Liverpool defender Nicol believes Chelsea and Conte would be satisfied with the signing of Morata from Real Madrid.
“Chelsea will end up coming out OK on this [the Lukaku saga] if they got Morata,” Nicol told ESPN FC.
Morata secured a transfer back to Real Madrid from Juventus last summer in a £29m deal after impressing in Turin.
However, Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane used the striker sparingly as Morata scored 15 goals in 26 appearances in La Liga.
