Gary Neville has admitted that he has been surprised to hear that Chelsea are considering selling Nemanja Matic this summer.

The Serbia international’s future at Stamford Bridge has been a relentless source of speculation this summer as Antonio Conte prepares for his second season in charge at the west London club.

Matic has been touted as a possible transfer target for Manchester United this summer as Jose Mourinho looks to recruit a holding midfielder ahead of the new campaign.

However, former Red Devils defender Neville is clearly a fan of the midfielder and is surprised that Chelsea are considering selling him this summer.

Neville told Sky Sports: “It’s a strange one for Chelsea to let him go because I thought he was really good for them with Kante.

“I think they need to strengthen, so I’m not sure why they’re letting him and they must have a replacement.”

Chelsea are preparing for a return to the Champions League next season after Conte led the Blues to the Premier League title in his first campaign in charge at the club.

The west London side impressed in the Premier League last term but did not have the distraction of European football as they focused solely on domestic affairs.

The Blues missed out on a domestic double after they were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal in the FA Cup final back in May.
