Jurgen Klopp has suggested that he will be satisfied if Liverpool are able to better their fourth-placed finish in the Premier League from last season next term.

The Reds secured a top-four finish in the 2016-17 campaign to book their place in next season’s Champions League as Klopp steered the Reds back into Europe’s elite club competition in his first full season in charge at Anfield.

Liverpool had looked like they would be one of the main contenders for the title last season but a slump in form at the start of 2017 meant that they ended up scrapping for a top-four finish.

Many Reds fans will be hoping that their team will be able to establish themselves as one of the main contenders for the title next season.

However, Klopp insists that his focus on Merseyside is on gradual improvement as he prepares for the 2017-18 campaign.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Mirror, Klopp said: “We were fourth last year. Maybe this year we can be third. But what I do know is that we can play better football. We need a change here and there – and those things will happen – but it’s not the main thing to do.

“The main job is to work with the players I already have.”

He continued: “I would love to fight for the title, of course, but I really believe in consistency. If you are convinced about the group you have then you don’t have to make big changes.

“Finishing fourth in the Premier League was, for us, a really big thing. Two really big teams were behind us and we should not forget that.”

Liverpool have signed Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke and Andy Robertson so far this summer.
