Steve Nicol predicts where Liverpool, Man United will finish next season
The former Liverpool defender is backing Manchester United to beat Jurgen Klopp's side to a top-four finish next season
Steve Nicol has backed Manchester United to finish above Liverpool in the Premier League top-four race next season.
The Reds managed to secure a return to the Champions League last season thanks to a fourth-place finish ahead of Arsenal.
Manchester United, on the other hand, ended up in sixth place in the Premier League table behind Liverpool and the Gunners.
However, Jose Mourinho’s side still managed to secure a spot in the Champions League next term thanks to winning the Europa League last term.
Manchester United have signed Benfica defender Victor Lindelof and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku in deals totalling £106m in the summer transfer window so far.
Liverpool have recruited AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke and Hull City defender Andy Robertson.
Former Liverpool defender Nicol believes Manchester United will finish above Jurgen Klopp’s side in the top four next term.
“Liverpool haven’t done anything to really shake themselves up in the transfer market,” Nicol told ESPN FC on Friday afternoon.
“Salah is a good singing but solidifies the front three. Thats it nothing more.
“Manchester United aren’t going to give much away.
“They’ve got the best goalkeeper in the world in De Gea, Pogba will be better than last year and Rashford could strike up a partnership with Lukaku and then they’ve got goals.
“That’s why I think Manchester United will finish above Liverpool.”
Manchester United were 3-2 winners against Southampton in the EFL Cup final at Wembley last season thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s heroics.
The Red Devils were 2-0 winners against Ajax in the Europa League final courtesy of goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba.
