John Barnes has insisted that Liverpool would be able to cope without Philippe Coutinho should he leave Anfield this summer.

The Brazilian’s future at Anfield has been a constant source of speculation in recent days amid suggestions that Barcelona are set to try and make a bid to bring him to Camp Nou.

There have been reports that Liverpool have already rejected a big-money bid for Coutinho this summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to keep his squad together ahead of their return to the Champions League next season.

However, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will be tempted into selling Coutinho should the Spanish giants make a big-money offer for him.

But former Liverpool star Barnes is certain that the Merseyside outfit would be able to cope without Coutinho and is backing Klopp to make the right decision.

Barnes told ESPN FC: “It’s not happened yet. Of course he may have agreed terms, but they have got to agree a transfer fee.

“I think it would be great if Liverpool keep him, but if he goes I wish him all the best.

“Liverpool will continue because Jurgen Klopp has got a good squad. He will maximise the potential of the squad without Coutinho.

“We’d like him to stay, but if he goes Jurgen Klopp will find a way to stay competitive.”

Liverpool are gearing up for a return to the Champions League next season after Klopp led the Reds to a fourth-placed finish last term.
