Virgil van Dijk is set to join Liverpool this summer from Southampton, according to reports in the British media.

Sky Sports is claiming that a source close to the player is confident that the 26-year-old Netherlands defender will end up joining the Reds despite the long-running transfer saga concerning his future.

Liverpool were forced to end their interest in signing Van Dijk last month after Southampton accused the Merseyside outfit of an alleged illegal approach.

However, despite the Reds issuing a statement apologising and saying they had dropped their interest in the player, Van Dijk continues to be linked with a move to Anfield.

Now, Sky Sports is claiming that Van Dijk is looking increasingly likely to end up as a Liverpool player this summer.

The same story claims that the player himself is keen to move to Liverpool and he has not travelled with Southampton to their training camp in France.

The article also credits both Manchester City and Chelsea with an interest in signing the highly-rated defender this summer.

Liverpool are preparing for a return to the Champions League next season after they finished fourth last term.
