Virgil van Dijk has been training alone after telling Southampton he wants to leave the club this summer, according to reports in the British media.

The Sun is reporting that Van Dijk has informed the Saints that he wants to seal a transfer away from the south coast before next season and has been forced to train on his own as a result.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with a bid for the 26-year-old Netherlands international, despite the embarrassment of their failed attempt to sign him last month, when they were accused of an alleged illegal approach by Southampton.

The same article in the Sun claims that Manchester City are also interested in signing the defender this summer as Pep Guardiola looks to strengthen his defence ahead of next season.

The story says that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp still sees Van Dijk as the “ideal” man to solve Liverpool’s defensive woes next season.

And Van Dijk himself is said to be intent on a switch to Anfield this summer.

Liverpool are looking to bolster their squad as they prepare for a return to the Champions League in Klopp’s second full season in charge at the club.
