Liverpool will only make a transfer bid to sign Virgil van Dijk this summer if they get the green light from Southampton to do so, according to reports in the British media.

The Daily Mail is reporting that the Reds are still keen on signing the defender but will only make a move if they are invited to table a bid by the Saints.

The 26-year-old defender is currently training alone after reportedly telling the Saints that he wants to quit the club this summer.

Liverpool were, of course, heavily linked with a move to sign Van Dijk back in June but the proposed move fell through when Southampton reported the Reds to the Premier League for an alleged illegal approach to the player.

Now, the report in the Daily Mail says that Liverpool would only consider making another bid to try and sign Van Dijk if Southampton made it clear they would listen to offers.

The same story says that Liverpool officials have been in touch with the Saints in a bid to repair the relationship between the two clubs.
