John Aldridge sends warning about Liverpool transfers to Jurgen Klopp
The Liverpool legend is concerned at the lack of summer deals at Anfield ahead of a crucial 2017-18 season
John Aldridge has warned Jurgen Klopp that he may have to settle for “Plan B” if Liverpool can’t agree deals to sign Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita.
The Reds have made three signings in the summer transfer window so far but have been left frustrated in their pursuit of the Southampton defender and RB Leipzig midfielder.
Liverpool were forced to apologise and end their pursuit of Van Dijk earlier this summer after Southampton threatened to report their Premier League rivals for tapping up the centre-half.
The Reds have been told that Guinea international Keita is not for sale despite the Merseyside outfit submitting two offers for the box-to-box midfielder.
Former Liverpool striker Aldridge is concerned at the club’s inability to get deals over the line for Keita and Van Dijk over the line with the new season looming on the horizon.
“It appears that the Anfield board are ready to back Klopp with big money to get those two players if they can iron out a deal, but Southampton are adamant that they will not sell Van Dijk and Leipzig seem equally unwilling to do business on Keita,” Aldridge wrote in his Sunday World column.
“You would hope that Liverpool have some Plan B options if they fail to get their first choice transfer targets because in a summer when the club should be spending more than ever before, there appears to be very little happening for Klopp.”
Liverpool signed Egypt international Mohamed Salah in a £36.7m deal from Serie A giants AS Roma earlier this month.
The Reds added Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke to their squad after the striker’s impressive performances with England’s Under-20 side at the World Cup.
Klopp bolstered his left-back options with the addition of Scottish defender Andy Robertson in an £8m deal from Hull City last week.
