Steve Nicol sends warning to Jurgen Klopp about Liverpool transfer deal
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol tells Jurgen Klopp that selling Philippe Coutinho would be a huge blow to his transfer plans
Steve Nicol has warned Jurgen Klopp that selling Philippe Coutinho would be a huge blow to his plans for Liverpool.
The Brazil international has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona in recent weeks as the Catalan side look to rebuild under new manager Ernesto Valverde.
Coutinho was a key part of Klopp’s side as Liverpool finished in fourth place last season thanks to the South American’s return of 13 goals and seven assists in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old has been regularly linked with a move to Barcelona since his ex-team-mate Luis Suarez completed a £65m switch to the Camp Nou in 2014.
However, former Liverpool defender Nicol has warned Klopp about the perils of allowing Coutinho to leave the Merseyside club ahead of the German’s second full season in charge at Anfield.
“To let him go would be a huge blow to the fans and the rest of the team,” Nicol told ESPN FC.
“It sends the wrong message. I don’t think Liverpool would do that regardless of the other.”
Coutinho moved to Liverpool in an £8.5m deal from Serie A giants Inter Milan in the 2013 January transfer window.
The Brazilian star scored seven times and made two assists in his final 10 games in the 2016-17 season.
