Gary Neville: These are the players Liverpool need to sign
The Manchester United legend suggests Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp needs up to five summer signings
Gary Neville has suggested that Liverpool still need to make five additions to their squad ahead of the 2017-18 season.
The Reds have endured a largely frustrating summer transfer window so far after Liverpool completed a mere two deals so far.
The Merseyside outfit spent a club-record fee on signing Egypt international Mohamed Salah in a £36.7m deal from Serie A giants AS Roma earlier this month.
Liverpool recruited England Under-20 international Dominic Solanke in a free transfer from Premier League champions Chelsea to add more depth up front.
However, there are concerns about Jurgen Klopp’s defence given that Liverpool conceded 42 goals in 38 games in the Premier League last season despite finishing in fourth place.
The Reds were rumoured to be on the brink of agreeing a deal to sign Virgil van Dijk before a deal fell through and Liverpool were forced to issue a statement apologising to Southampton.
Klopp used former England midfielder James Milner in an unorthodox left-back role last term given the German coach’s misgivings about Spain international Alberto Moreno.
Speaking to Sky Sports News about what areas Klopp needs to strengthen this summer, former Manchester United defender Neville suggested that the Liverpool boss needs at least five new signings.
“I think they need centre-backs, Liverpool, and a left-back,” Neville said.
“James Milner did a brilliant job last season but to think that he can continue to keep playing there.
“I think they need to sort out the defence and the goalkeeper. And potentially a holding midfield player depending on how Jordan Henderson is.”
