Ex-defender backs Liverpool to complete double transfer swoop
Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol is backing the Reds to complete a double swoop to sign Naby Keita and Virgil van Dijk
Steve Nicol believes there is a “good chance” Liverpool could sign both Naby Keita and Virgil van Dijk this summer.
The Reds were linked with a move to sign the Netherlands international from Southampton earlier this summer but a deal failed to materialise.
Indeed, Liverpool were forced to issue an embarrassing statement apologising to the Saints about a “misunderstanding” surrounding their pursuit of the Dutch star.
However, the Reds continue to be linked with a move to sign the 26-year-old, who is thought to be keen on working with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
The Merseyside outfit have also been linked with making a club-record bid to sign RB Leipzig star Keita in the current transfer window.
The 22-year-old Guinea international was one of the Bundesliga’s standout players last season following his £12.75m switch to RB Leipzig from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg.
Speaking to ESPN FC about the possibility of Liverpool signing Keita or Van Dijk this summer, Nicol said:
“I think there is a good possibility both might happen.”
Liverpool signed former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah in a £36.7m deal from Serie A giants AS Roma earlier this month.
England Under-20 international Dominic Solanke has also completed a free transfer to Liverpool from Chelsea.
