Steve Nicol sends Liverpool warning to Jurgen Klopp about 25-year-old attacker
The Liverpool legend warns Jurgen Klopp about the perils of selling Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona this summer
Steve Nicol has warned Jurgen Klopp that he can’t risk undermining his progress at Liverpool by selling Philippe Coutinho.
The Brazil international has been attracting interest from La Liga giants Barcelona over the past week.
The Catalan side are rumoured to be ready to test Liverpool’s resolve with a big-money offer to sign the 25-year-old playmaker.
Coutinho was a key part of Klopp’s side that secured a top-four finish in the Premier League last season.
The South American playmaker scored 13 times and made seven assists in 31 appearances in the English top flight last term.
Klopp is readying his Liverpool squad for a return to the Champions League in the coming weeks and months in his second full season at Anfield.
Former Liverpool defender Nicol warned the charismatic German coach that selling Coutinho would be detrimental to the foundations that Klopp has laid at the Merseyside club.
“Klopp has himself a base,” Nicol told ESPN FC. “He has got into the top four. Now he has to kick on. He can’t kick on if he lets his players go.”
