Liverpool told 26-year-old would improve team but isn’t one of the best
Arsenal legend Stewart Robson believes Virgil van Dijk would improve Liverpool but rubbished talk of the centre-half being the best in the Premier League
Virgil van Dijk would improve Liverpool but the Southampton star isn’t one of the Premier League’s best defenders, according to Stewart Robson.
The Merseyside outfit have been linked with a move to sign the Netherlands international throughout the summer transfer window.
Van Dijk appeared to be on the brink of a move to Liverpool before the Reds were forced to issue an apology to the Saints about their pursuit of the Dutch defender.
However, Liverpool continue to be linked with the 26-year-old star, who is now training away from the rest of his Southampton team-mates.
Former Arsenal striker Robson believes Van Dijk would be a good addition to Klopp’s squad even though the retired forward appeared to suggest the Saints star is overhyped.
“He is a decent centre-half. I don’t think he’s is one of the Premier League best players in that position,” Robson told ESPN FC.
“He struggled when he first came to Southampton. He has had some poor games in the Dutch side that is poor. He is a very good player. He would improve Liverpool.”
Van Dijk moved to Southampton from Scottish Premier League champions Celtic in a £15m deal in 2015.
Liverpool have signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah in a £39m deal in the summer transfer window.
Jurgen Klopp has also recruited England Under-20 international Dominic Solanke and Hull City left-back Andy Robertson.
