Possible Liverpool boost as club look to sign replacement for top 26-year-old – report
Liverpool have been handed a boost after reports claimed that Southampton have earmarked a replacement for Virgil van Dijk
Southampton will target Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer as a replacement for Virgil van Dijk, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool, according to reports in England.
The Daily Mail is reporting that the Saints are interested in signing the Austrian defender from their Premier League rivals to prepare for the departure of Van Dijk this summer.
The same article states that Van Dijk’s camp is confident that the 26-year-old will secure a summer move amid interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City.
While Southampton have refused to entertain the prospect of Van Dijk calling time on his stint at St Mary’s, the EFL Cup runners-up have drawn up plans in the event the Dutch star does leave.
Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign the Netherlands international throughout the summer transfer window but a deal has failed to materialise so far.
Indeed, the Reds were forced to issue a statement apologising to Southampton over their pursuit of the centre-half after the Saints threatened to report Liverpool to the FA.
Liverpool have signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke and Hull City defender Andy Robertson in the summer transfer window so far.
