Liverpool told to sign top 25-year-old defender
Danny Murphy wants Liverpool to add Virgil van Dijk to their squad this summer
Danny Murphy has urged Liverpool to sign Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window.
The Merseyside outfit were linked with a move to sign the Netherlands international earlier this summer but a deal fell through in embarrassing circumstances.
Liverpool were forced to issue a statement apologising for their pursuit of the 25-year-old defender and the Reds ended their interest in the Southampton star.
However, the 18-time English champions continue to be linked with an audacious swoop to sign the former Celtic man despite risking the wrath of the south coast club.
Liverpool’s title rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked with a move to sign the Premier League defender despite Southampton’s insistence Van Dijk won’t be sold.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ about transfer speculation linking Liverpool with a move to sign Van Dijk, former Reds midfielder Murphy urged Jurgen Klopp to sign the centre-half.
“I hope they get Van Dijk,” Murphy said.
“I hope that happens because I think defensively is where they need to get better.
“They need a left-back [too] of course.”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League after a two-season absence.
