Jose Mourinho sends message to Man United fans about Alvaro Morata
Jose Mourinho confirms that Manchester United wanted to sign Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid this summer
Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Manchester United were interested in signing Alvaro Morata this summer but that the Red Devils could not agree a fee with Real Madrid.
The Red Devils were heavily linked with a move for the 24-year-old Spain international throughout June as Mourinho looked to bolster his attacking options at Old Trafford.
It appeared that the striker was closing in on a move to Old Trafford but after the Red Devils were not able to agree a fee with the Spanish club, they quickly switched their attentions to landing Romelu Lukaku from Everton.
Mourinho has now confirmed that Manchester United were indeed in for Morata but says he holds nothing against Real Madrid for standing firm in their valuation of the player.
Speaking at a news conference in LA on Friday, Mourinho said: “I am nobody to talk about a player who is not from my team. Nor one from Real Madrid.
“We have had interest (in Morata). It is obvious, it is public and we have not reached an economic agreement.
“It is a right of Madrid to ask for their players the amount they want. We will not be the ones who put a price on a Real Madrid player. I cannot criticise Real Madrid and I can not criticise my club.
“(We made) offers we thought were fair and yet no agreement was reached.”
Manchester United are preparing for a return to the Champions League next season after the Red Devils won the Europa League in Mourinho’s first campaign in charge at the club.
The Red Devils will also be hoping to mount a serious title challenge next term after they finished sixth in the Premier League table.
