Juan Mata has taken to social media to pay a classy tribute to Wayne Rooney after the striker left Manchester United to sign for Everton.

The 31-year-old forward signed a two-year deal with the Toffees on Sunday as he sealed a return to his boyhood club after 13 impressive years at Manchester United.

Rooney won a whole host of trophies with the Red Devils and also leaves Old Trafford as the club’s all-time record goal-scorer.

Mata played alongside Rooney for Manchester United following the Spaniard’s move to the Red Devils from Chelsea back in January 2014.

And the Spanish playmaker is clearly full of admiration for the England striker.

Mata posted the picture above on his personal Instagram account of the pair celebrating Manchester United’s Europa League triumph in Stockholm back in May and wrote the caption: “When we took that photo I hoped it was not our last trophy together, but unfortunately it seems to be.

“Thank you Wazza. You are undoubtedly a legend of the club and the game, but also a great person and teammate.

“All the best in your new chapter, you deserve it. I feel lucky, I’ve played with Wayne Rooney!! @manchesterunited @waynerooney #FarewellToALegend.”

Manchester United jetted off to the United States to begin their pre-season tour of America on Sunday.

The Red Devils, who won the Europa League and EFL Cup last term, are gearing up for a return to the Champions League next season.
