Jose Mourinho explains why Man United star is training better than ever
The Manchester United manager believes David De Gea is thriving under pressure from Sergio Romero in the Red Devils squad
Jose Mourinho has claimed that David De Gea has found a new level in pre-season after the Manchester United number one was dropped last season.
The Spain international was left out of the Manchester United team for their final two Premier League games of the 2016-17 campaign amid talk of interest from Real Madrid.
Sergio Romero was drafted into the Red Devils side after the Argentina international impressed throughout the club’s triumphant Europa League campaign.
Jose Mourinho stuck with the South American for the Europa League final as Manchester United eased to a 2-0 win against Dutch giants Ajax in Stockholm.
However, Real Madrid ended their interest in the 25-year-old shot stopper and De Gea is now preparing for a seventh season at Old Trafford.
Manchester United boss Mourinho believes De Gea has reached an even greater level under pressure from the club’s number two goalkeeper Romero.
“I’m impressed with him and I’m also impressed with David,” Mourinho told his media conference in Santa Clara on Saturday evening.
“The best thing that could happen to David is the way Romero played last season. Until then, David was clearly a safe man and choice. He was the undoubted choice.
“After what Romero did last season, David thinks he is training in another way and I think he is much better than before and he has amazing conditions to progress.
“To have both at the level they can be is fantastic for me.”
De Gea moved to Manchester United in a £17m deal from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in the 2011 summer transfer window.
Manchester United have signed Swedish defender Victor Lindelof and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku so far this summer.
