Ruud van Nistelrooy has warned Romelu Lukaku that he will have to step his game up if he wants to be a hit at Manchester United next season.

The Belgian forward became the Red Devils’ second signing of the summer earlier this month as Jose Mourinho moved quickly to bolster his attacking options at Old Trafford.

Lukaku finished as the Premier League’s second top scorer last season at Everton and the 24-year-old brings proven top-flight experience to Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy knows a thing or two about leading the Manchester United attack, and the former Netherlands international is backing the Belgian forward to make the step up at Old Trafford next season.

Speaking to Manchester United’s website, Van Nistelrooy said: “He’s proven himself at Everton. His challenge now is to make another step up and to prove himself at his new club as well.

“It’s different playing at United to playing at Everton, so it will be a mental step, too. The pressure is different, so if he’s capable of dealing with that, I can’t see any problems.

“I also think having better players around him will help and I think he’ll fit in really well. I expect he’ll start hitting his peak now.

“From the club’s point of view, it’s the perfect time to sign him. Over the next six, seven or eight years, United will hopefully have a great centre-forward in Romelu Lukaku.”

Manchester United are gearing up for a return to the Champions League next season after the Red Devils won the Europa League last term.

The Red Devils are thought to still be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as Mourinho prepares for his second season in charge at the club.
