Man United told to sign 28-year-old star to improve midfield
Gary Pallister believes Nemanja Matic would give Manchester United's midfield much-needed presence
Nemanja Matic would bring a greater presence to the Manchester United side, according to Gary Pallister.
The Serbia international has been heavily linked with a move to the Red Devils in the summer transfer window but Chelsea are demanding £50m for the experienced midfielder.
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho signed Matic in a £21m deal in 2014 to bring the 28-year-old back to Stamford Bridge before the defensive midfielder helped Chelsea win the Premier League title and the EFL Cup in 2014-15.
Matic played an important role in Chelsea’s second top-flight crown in three seasons but the Serbian star is now facing increased competition from £39m summer signing Tiemoue Bakayoko from Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco.
Manchester United are in the market for a holding midfielder this summer, having being linked with a transfer bid for Monaco’s Brazilian midfielder Fabinho and Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier.
Retired defender Pallister believes Matic would be a great addition to the Manchester United midfield ahead of the 2017-18 season.
“Matic is a physical presence and apart from Fellaini we have quite a small midfield,” said Pallister, speaking exclusively to 888sport.
“When we looked at United last season we lacked that presence and Matic will certainly bring that. He’s an excellent player though and it would be a surprise if Chelsea were prepared to let him go.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season.
The Red Devils won the EFL Cup and the Europa League last term.
