Paul Pogba is capable of getting to the same level as Barcelona and Real Madrid’s best players, Steve Nicol believes.

Manchester United’s record signing was the recipient of praise from his manager Jose Mourinho following their final International Champions Cup clash.

Mourinho hailed Pogba’s impressive pre-season performances and claimed that the £89m player was matching the performances of La Liga’s best.

The France international endured a mixed first season in the Premier League after arriving in a world record deal from Serie A champions Juventus last summer.

Former Liverpool defender Nicol believes Pogba has the potential to become one of the best players in the world but is still short of that level.

“Paul Pogba has fantastic ability,” Nicol told ESPN FC on Friday afternoon.

“His ceiling is at the level of Barcelona and Real Madrid players. He isn’t there yet.

“He can’t be 100 per cent fit yet. What will he be like this season?

“Jose is talking up his player and giving hm confidence, which we expect. I wouldn’t look into it too deeply.”

Pogba scored five goals and made four assists in 30 appearances in the Premier League last season.

Manchester United have signed Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku in the summer transfer window so far as Mourinho looks to build on their EFL Cup and Europa League success last term.\\
