Dwight Yorke has urged Romelu Lukaku to continue to believe in himself after securing a big-money move to Manchester United.

The Red Devils managed to hijack Chelsea’s deal to sign the Belgium international in the summer transfer window despite Lukaku being heavily tipped to return to Stamford Bridge.

Manchester United have handed the 24-year-old their number nine shirt in a show of faith in the Belgian striker following his £75m switch from Premier League rivals Everton.

Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games in the Premier League last season to finish as the division’s second-highest goal-socrer behind Harry Kane, leaving Everton have netted 53 goals in 110 top-flight appearances.

Former Manchester United striker Yorke has backed Lukaku to embrace the pressure of playing for the Red Devils despite suggestions the former Chelsea striker could thrive in Old Trafford’s unforgiving environment.

“He needs to be himself, there is a reason they paid this enormous amount,” Yorke told ESPN.

“He is a great player and he needs to believe in himself.

“The step up, no disrespect to Everton, comes with great expectation and scrutiny. He needs to go and embrace it and enjoy it.

“He is still a young man and is still in that learning curve, he will learn what it’s like to play for Manchester United.”

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season but still managed to secure a place in the Champions League by virtue of winning the Europa League crown.
