Ryan Giggs says Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial need to get into double figures next season to ease pressure on Manchester United signing Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgium international completed a £75m switch to Manchester United earlier this month to become the club’s second most-expensive signing of all-time behind his new team-mate Paul Pogba.

Lukaku scored 25 goals in 36 appearances in the Premier League last season to finish behind Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in the goal-scoring charts but questions remain about his big-game temperament.

Only Zlatan Ibrahimovic hit double figures in the Premier League last term as Manchester United ended up scoring less goals than ninth-placed Bournemouth.

In fact, Juan Mata was Manchester United’s second-highest goal-scorer in the top flight after a return of six goals in 25 Premier League appearances.

Former Manchester United midfielder Giggs admits the Red Devils need to have a greater goal threat from a variety of attacking positions next season to take the pressure off Lukaku up front.

“The main reason Jose bought Lukaku is for goals and to turn all those draws at Old Trafford into wins,” Giggs told the Daily Telegraph.

“There will be a lot of pressure and scrutiny on him but those around him also need to step up and score more.

“Juan Mata did his fair share, but [Anthony] Martial, Marcus [Rashford] and [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan have got to get double figures. So although the most pressure will be on Lukaku, the onus is on the whole team.”

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season but won the EFL Cup and the Europa League to finish the season on a positive note.
