Ryan Giggs explains what new Man United signing must do to score 25 goals a season
The former Manchester United midfielder has some advice about what it takes to thrive as a striker at Old Trafford
Ryan Giggs has told Romelu Lukaku to adopt the mentality of Michael Owen, Andy Cole and Ruud van Nistelrooy at Manchester United.
The Red Devils signed Lukaku in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton ahead of interest from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
Lukaku will be challenged with filling the void left by club captain Wayne Rooney and last season’s top goal-scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The Belgian forward netted 25 times in 36 games last season to outscore Ibrahimovic in the Premier League.
However, questions have been asked about Lukaku’s ability to thrive under the demands and pressure at Manchester United.
And Giggs offered Lukaku some advice about what it takes to become a prolific goal-scorer like Cole and Van Nistelrooy at Old Trafford.
“Michael Owen, Andy Cole, Ruud van Nistelrooy and all those great strikers missed chances but their mentality was ‘next time, I will score’,” Giggs told the Daily Telegraph.
“Everyone knows Lukaku can score, but it’s about the mental strength to believe if you miss a chance, or go a few games without a goal, the goal will come.
“If you have that you can get 25 goals or more.”
Manchester United have signed Swedish defender Victor Lindelof in a £30.7m deal from Portuguese champions Benfica in the summer transfer window so far.
The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League last season but still won the EFL Cup and the Europa League in their first season under Jose Mourinho.
