Ander Herrera takes to social media to pay tribute to Wayne Rooney after his move back to Everton

Ander Herrera has taken to social media pay tribute to Wayne Rooney after his transfer to Everton from Manchester United was confirmed on Sunday.

The striker has secured a return to his boyhood club after falling out of favour at Old Trafford last season under Jose Mourinho.

Rooney returns to Goodison Park having become Manchester United’s all-time record goal-scorer and after winning a host of trophies with the Red Devils.

Herrera knows Rooney well from their time together at Old Trafford since 2014, and the Spanish midfielder was quick to take to social media to pay tribute to the veteran forward on Sunday after his move was confirmed.

Herrera posted the picture above on his personal Instagram account and wrote the caption: “One day I will be able to tell my grandkids I played with you.

“All the best and thank you @waynerooney #FarewellToALegend.”

Manchester United jetted off to the United States for their pre-season tour of America on Sunday as they look to challenge for the Premier League title in Jose Mourinho’s second campaign in charge at Old Trafford.
