Ex-defender expresses concern about new Man United signing
Steve Nicol admits that Victor Lindelof has not looked up to scratch during Manchester United's tour
Steve Nicol has admitted that Victor Lindelof has not looked up to scratch during Manchester United’s pre-season tour.
The Swedish defender became the Red Devils’ first signing of the summer last month when he arrived at Old Trafford from Portuguese side Benfica as Jose Mourinho moved quickly to bolster his defence ahead of next season.
However, the 23-year-old has seemingly struggled to adapt to life in a Red Devils shirt and has not been in top form during Manchester United’s tour of the United States.
Former Liverpool defender Nicol says that it is too early to judge Lindelof, but admits that it is not looking great for the centre-half so far.
Speaking to ESPN FC, Nicol said: “I’m going to use the ‘it’s only pre-season’ line for Lindelof.
“He has made some mistakes. The one against Real Madrid would be the mistake that would concern me.
“It’s one thing not to be up to speed in pre-season because that’s what it is for. What concerns me is that Lindelof didn’t recognise he was so late on the tackle that gave the penalty away.
“It would be the one concern I’d have.”
Manchester United are preparing for a return to the Champions League next season after Mourinho led the Red Devils to Europa League glory last term.
The Red Devils also lifted the EFL Cup in Mourinho’s first campaign in charge at Old Trafford.
