Romelu Lukaku reveals Man United conversation with Jose Mourinho
Romelu Lukaku admits that he cannot wait to play for Jose Mourinho after agreeing a move to Manchester United
Romelu Lukaku has admitted that he cannot wait to play for Jose Mourinho once again after agreeing to join Manchester United this summer.
The Red Devils confirmed on Saturday morning that they had agreed a fee to sign the 24-year-old striker from Everton after seemingly beating Chelsea to his signature.
Lukaku’s move to Old Trafford has prompted some surprise, considering that Mourinho was the manager who deemed the striker to be surplus to requirements at Chelsea back in 2014 when he was sold to Everton.
However, Lukaku insists that he is simply looking forward to proving himself under the Portuguese coach and thanked him for the opportunity.
“[Mourinho is] a guy who I wanted to play for since I was 10 years old, so now to have the opportunity to work under him again is great,” Lukaku said, speaking in an exclusive interview with ESPN.
“We’ve been in contact. He explained to me how the club was like, what he expects from me.
“You know, we were together under different circumstances. Obviously, the first time when I met him, I was still a young kid, and I was eager to play. And he understood my decision why I left at the time. I returned on the pitch.
“Now I’m 24. I’m a grown man. He sees the maturity that has grown throughout the years, so I’m really thankful for the opportunity he gave me again.”
Manchester United jetted off to the United States for their pre-season tour of America on Sunday.
Lukaku and Paul Pogba have been holidaying together in Los Angeles and will link up with the squad directly in the US as Mourinho’s men begin their preparations for next season.
