Mikael Silvestre is confident that Anthony Martial will answer his critics at Manchester United.

The Red Devils forward has been linked with a potential exit at Old Trafford this summer after a difficult season under Jose Mourinho.

Martial established himself as one of the Premier League’s most-exciting prospects following his £36m move from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in 2015.

The 21-year-old scored 11 goals in 49 games in his first season with Manchester United under Louis van Gaal’s management.

However, the Dutch coach’s successor Mourinho used Martial more sparingly in 2016-17 and the Manchester United manager regularly criticised the France international.

Martial only scored four times in 21 appearances in the Premier League last term to spark reports of a potential move to Arsenal or AS Roma this summer.

However, former Manchester United defender Silvestre has backed Martial to answer his critics and realise his talent at Old Trafford.

“When you reach that level and then you have a difficult time, you bounce back, because you are a competitor,” Silvestre told the Daily Star.

“Anthony has reached the level of Manchester United and the French national team, so I think he will answer the critics and improve his game to perform at least as the same level as his first season.

“Sometimes, when you take a slap to the back of the head, it’s difficult to bounce back, and I think the whole season he was trying to get back to his best. But his character is a good one, so I think he will answer the critics and do better.”

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season but still managed to qualify for the Champions League.

The Red Devils were 2-0 winners against Ajax in the Europa League final to secure a spot in Europe’s premier club competitions.
