Pundit: Why Man United signing top 28-year-old doesn’t make sense

The Liverpool legend has questioned why Gareth Bale would want to leave the Champions League holders to move to Manchester United this summer

Steve Nicol has questioned why Gareth Bale would consider leaving Real Madrid to join Manchester United this summer.

The Wales international has been linked with a potential move to the Premier League side in the summer transfer window.

Bale’s future at Real Madrid has been cast into doubt as los Blancos look to get a deal over the line to sign Kylian Mbappe from AS Monaco.

The 28-year-old attacker moved to the Spanish capital in a then world-record £85.3m deal from Tottenham Hotspur in the 2013 summer transfer window.

Bale has won the Champions League three times during his four-season stay at Real Madrid, while the forward got his hands on the La Liga crown for the first time last term.

Former Liverpool defender Nicol doesn’t believe Bale would want to leave the best team in Europe to join a club that failed to finish in the Premier League’s top four last season.

“I don’t see how it happens,” Nicol told ESPN FC on Friday afternoon.

“Gareth Bale has three Champions League winner’s medals in the last four seasons.

“Why is he going to leave the best team in the world to go to Manchester United? Gareth Bale was injured at the end of last season.

“When he is fit, he plays.”

Manchester United managed to qualify for this season’s Champions League after a 2-0 victory over Dutch giants Ajax in the Europa League final in May.

The Red Devils have signed Swedish defender Victor Lindelof and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku in the summer transfer window so far.
