Jose Mourinho told Man United don’t need summer signing in key area
Gary Pallister insists Manchester United don't need any more defensive signings this summer
Manchester United don’t need any more defensive signings this summer, Gary Pallister has claimed.
The Red Devils started their summer spending with the £30.7m addition of Sweden centre-half Victor Lindelof from Portuguese champions Benfica.
The 23-year-old will compete with Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo for a starting spot in the Manchester United team.
Lindelof has endured a conspicuous start to his Red Devils career after he made mistakes in their pre-season games against LA Galaxy and Real Madrid.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Spain goalkeeper David De Gea won’t be joining La Liga giants Real Madrid this summer.
Italy international Matteo Darmian has been linked with a potential move to Serie A champions Juventus but a deal has failed to materialise.
Former Manchester United defender Pallister believes the Red Devils have sufficient defensive options in their squad.
“They’ve brought in a new defender in Lindelof and when you add him to Bailly it looks very good,” said Pallister, speaking exclusively to 888sport.
“They’ve also got Rojo in there who came to the fore last year and was terrific until he suffered a serious knee injury. Then you also have Smalling and Jones who have a lot to prove.
“It looks like we’re keeping De Gea which is great because we’ve seen in the past how difficult it is to replace top quality goalkeepers – it took us a long time to replace Peter Schmeichel when he left the club. Valencia has come on leaps and bounds and his outstanding performances led to Jose calling him one of the best right-backs in the world.
“The only question mark is at left-back. Shaw has had injury problems and he’s found it hard to catch the manger’s eye. Jose was quite tough on him last season. Then there’s Darmian who is a right-back playing at left-back. Overall though we have a lot of the bases covered and there’s a lot of quality in there.”
Manchester United have also signed Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku in a £75m deal from Everton earlier this month to replace Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season.
