Manchester United are still confident of getting a deal for Chelsea star Nemanja Matic over the line, according to reports in England.

The Guardian is reporting that Manchester United are prepared to concede defeat in pursuit of their number one defensive midfield target Eric Dier.

The same article states that the Red Devils have failed with a £35m offer for the Serbia international but Matic is eager to move to Old Trafford.

According to the story, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will demand £50m from their Premier League title rivals for the 28-year-old holding midfielder.

Jose Mourinho re-signed Matic during his second spell in charge of the west London side after the Blues spent £21m to bring the Serbian from Portuguese champions Benfica in 2014.

Matic has won two Premier League titles and the EFL Cup during a three-and-a-half season spell at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have signed AS Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko in a £39.6m deal in the summer transfer window to partner PFA player of the year N’Golo Kante in Antonio Conte’s midfield next term.
