Nemanja Matic’s proposed move to Manchester United would be good business for both the player and the club, according to Stewart Robson.

The Serbia international has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks as a potential defensive midfield addition.

Premier League champions Chelsea are thought to be open to selling Matic in a deal worth around £50m despite the Serb turning 29 later this year.

The former Benfica midfielder won the Premier League title and the EFL Cup in his second Premier League season at Chelsea under current Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

Matic was also an important part of Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side that eased to the top-flight crown last term.

Asked whether Matic’s proposed move to Manchester United from Chelsea was likely to go through, former Arsenal striker Robson told ESPN FC:

“It would be good business for Matic, he isn’t in the Chelsea squad and everyone knows he wants to leave.

“It would be good business for Manchester United, they need another holding midfield player, I don’t think Herrera wants to play in that position. It is a massive hit for player and club.”

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season but still won the EFL Cup and the Europa League under Mourinho.

Matic is facing increased competition for a starting spot following the addition of TIemoue Bakayoko to the Chelsea squad.
