Outspoken Arsenal fan Piers Morgan reacts to the Gunners beating Chelsea in the penalty shootout in the Community Shield
Piers Morgan admitted that he was delighted to see Arsenal beat Chelsea at Wembley despite describing the Community Shield as a “meaningless trophy”.
The Gunners were 2-1 winners against the Premier League champions in the FA Cup final in the final domestic game last season.
The London rivals met at the home of English football again on Sunday in the season’s curtain raiser and Chelsea took command of the clash in the second half.
Nigeria international Victor Moses finished from close range in the 46th minute to help Chelsea to get one hand on the trophy.
However, Pedro Rodriguez was sent off for a poor challenge on Mohamed Elneny and Arsenal summer signing Sead Kolasinac equalised from the subsequent free-kick.
Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and new signing Alvaro Morata missed their spot-kick efforts in the penalty shootout, while Arsenal dispatched all of their efforts to win the trophy.
Outspoken Arsenal fan Morgan couldn’t hide his delight at beating Chelsea despite playing down the significance of winning the Community Shield.
Morgan wrote on Twitter: “BREAKING: Arsenal win meaningless trophy! (But always fun to beat Chelsea).”
Arsenal signed Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04.
The Gunners have also spent a £52m club-record fee on Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette.
