Jamie Redknapp names one Arsenal star that needs to have a big season
The former Tottenham star believes Granit Xhaka needs to have big season for Arsenal after a disappointing debut campaign
Jamie Redknapp has warned Granit Xhaka that he needs to have a big season in the Arsenal team.
The Switzerland international was Arsenal’s marquee signing in the 2016 summer transfer window after the defensive midfielder completed a £33m move from Borussia Monchengladbach.
Xhaka was signed to bolster Arsene Wenger’s midfield options but the Swiss star failed to impress in his debut campaign in the Premier League despite his reputation in the Bundesliga.
Indeed, the 23-year-old was sent off twice against Swansea City and Burnley as Xhaka struggled with indisicpline and the pace of the Premier League.
Arsenal manager Wenger has opted against recruiting a new defensive midfielder this summer despite concerns about Xhaka.
Former Liverpool and Tottenham captain Redknapp warned the Arsenal star that he will be expected to have a big season for the north London side.
“Xhaka was their big-money signing last summer. He needs to have a big season,” Redknapp told The Debate on Sky Sports.
Arsenal signed Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 back in June.
The north London side have also spent a club-record £52m fee on France striker Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon.
The Gunners were 4-3 winners against Leicester City in their Premier League opener on Friday night.
