Jamie Redknapp sends bleak message to Arsenal fans about new season
Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp has warned Arsenal that the Gunners are set for another disappointing season under Arsene Wenger
Jamie Redknapp has warned Arsenal supporters that the Gunners are set for a re-run of last season in the 2017-18 campaign.
The north London suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday evening after Jese Rodriguez scored a first-half winner.
Arsenal struggled to make an impact in the Premier League clash at Stoke in the absence of Chile international Alexis Sanchez.
The Gunners have conceded four goals in their opening two games after 4-3 win against Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League last weekend.
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a place in the Champions League.
Arsene Wenger signed France international Alexandre Lacazette in a club-record £52m deal from Ligue 1 Lyon last month after Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac completed a free transfer from Schalke 04.
Former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp made a gloomy prediction about Arsenal’s 2017-18 season under Wenger.
“As Arsenal were slipping to defeat at Stoke, I could not help but think I was watching a re-run of last season,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.
“They rode their luck against Leicester and were punished by a Stoke side who were far hungrier.
“Yes, Arsenal have not always had success at Stoke but it was only three months ago that they beat them 4-1 on the same ground.”
Redknapp added: “The problem is that everything is far too comfortable at Arsenal. Nobody plays as if they are under any pressure.
“I cannot understand why players such as Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs are content to remain on the fringes of the first team. They should be trying to force their way in or go and kickstart their careers elsewhere.
“After Arsenal’s superb victory in the FA Cup final over Chelsea, I hoped this season would be a fresh start. Instead, it appears to have been a false dawn. Arsenal remain beset by the same old problems.”
Arsenal won the FA Cup last season thanks to a 2-1 victory over Premier League champions Chelsea at Wembley.
The north London side haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04.
The Gunners beat Chelsea on penalties in the Community Shield at Wembley earlier this month.
