Ian Wright questions why Arsenal didn’t rival Man United for 29-year-old
The Arsenal legend questions why Arsene Wenger didn't make a move to sign Nemanja Matic ahead of his switch to Man United
Ian Wright has questioned why Arsenal didn’t rival Manchester United for the signing of Nemanja Matic.
The Red Devils managed to pull of a transfer coup earlier this month after the Serbia international completed a £40m move to Manchester United from Chelsea.
Matic was a key member of Jose Mourinho’s title-winning team in the 2014-15 season before the defensive midfielder helped Chelsea to win their top-flight crown in Antonio Conte’s first campaign.
The Serb will help to reinforce Manchester United’s midfield ahead of the new season, with Matic tipped to play alongside Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have signed Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac from Schalke 04, while the Gunners spent a club-record 52m fee on Ligue 1 side Lyon.
The Gunners have Granit Xhaka, Francis Coquelin and Mohamed Elneny in midfield, but Arsene Wenger has been criticised for failing to sign a commanding midfielder.
Former Arsenal striker Wright believes Matic would have been the perfect player to act as a midfield lieutenant for Wenger given his experience.
“To see Matic has left Chelsea and has gone to Manchester United… could you [have] persuaded him to stay in London?” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“He is in London. He is settled. Can you get him to come to Arsenal because that is the kind of player Arsenal needs.”
The Gunners played out a thrilling 4-3 victory over Leicester City in their opening Premier League game of the new season.
Arsenal won the FA Cup last season thanks to a 2-1 victory over champions Chelsea.
