Arsene Wenger told he should’ve signed top 23-year-old for Arsenal
Nigel Winterburn admits he was surprised that Arsenal didn't make a move to try and sign Jordan Pickford this summer
Arsene Wenger should have made a move to sign Jordan Pickford for Arsenal this summer, according to Nigel Winterburn.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper has earned a reputation as one of the Premier League’s finest young shot-stoppers despite Sunderland being relegated last season.
Everton ended up signing Pickford this summer, despite the goalkeeper having been linked with some of the Premier League’s top clubs.
And former Arsenal defender Winterburn admits that he was surprised the Gunners didn’t make a move to try and land him, given that Petr Cech is approaching the end of his career.
Speaking to Sky Sports News on Wednesday morning, Winterburn said: “He’s a goalkeeper that I really like.
“I’m surprised that some of the real big clubs, I’m surprised Arsenal didn’t look at him and try and buy him if I’m being totally honest.
“But maybe with him, I still see him at a big club now at Everton, who are going to sit higher up the league.”
Cech has been unable to keep a clean sheet in both of Arsenal’s first two Premier League games, with the Gunners having conceded four goals in their opening two fixtures.
Arsenal are preparing to take on Liverpool in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Sunday afternoon as they look to bounce back from the disappointment of their 1-0 loss to Stoke City last weekend.
The north London side have signed two players so far this summer, after having tied up deals for Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette.
