Frank Lampard sends message to Arsenal fans about new signing
The Chelsea legend was impressed with Alexandre Lacazette's performance in Arsenal's Community Shield win
Frank Lampard has praised Arsenal’s decision to give Alexandre Lacazette a chance to take his talent to the Premier League.
The Gunners signed Lacazette in a club-record £52m deal from Ligue 1 side Lyon last month to improve his attacking options ahead of the new season.
The 26-year-old moved to Arsenal following a prolific spell with Lyon after the centre-forward netted 100 goals in 203 appearances in Ligue 1 since making his debut in 2010.
Lacazette made his competitive debut in the Community Shield on Sunday but the Arsenal summer signing was unable to beat Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois despite hitting the woodwork.
Arsenal won the Community Shield on penalties after Lacazette’s fellow new arrival Sead Kolasinac cancelled out Victor Moses’ 46th-minute opener at Wembley.
Former Chelsea midfielder Lampard was impressed with the Arsenal signing’s performance in the season’s curtain raiser following Lacazette’s club-record switch to The Emirates.
“He’s sharp, he’s got a great touch and has an eye for goal,” Lampard told BT Sport on Sunday evening.
“They’ve been crying out for a player like that for a couple of years now and it looks like they might have found one.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a place in the Champions League.
The Gunners managed to end the season on a positive note following a 2-1 victory over champions Chelsea in the FA Cup final in May.
Arsenal will start the new Premier League campaign with a home clash against Leicester City on Friday night.
