The Germany international has entered the final 12 months of his current Arsenal contract, which means the playmaker could be available on a free transfer next summer.
Unlike his team-mate Alexis Sanchez who is in the same situation, former Real Madrid star Ozil hasn’t been linked with a potential summer move despite his undoubted quality.
As a result, the 26-year-old is being tipped to remain at the north London side for the 2017-18 campaign, although it remains to been seen whether Ozil will sign a new contract.
Former Arsenal defender Groves attempted to explain why Ozil doesn’t command the same interest as Sanchez from Europe’s top clubs despite his pedigree.
“I think it comes down to what other clubs are looking for,” Groves told bwin.
“Liverpool, City, Chelsea and Spurs probably don’t need Ozil as he doesn’t suit their style of play. It’s nothing to do with Ozil’s quality, it’s more to do with the other teams style of play. When Arsenal lose the ball, he doesn’t contribute as much as other players would.”
Groves added: “He’s not a luxury player if he’s providing assists, scoring goals and creating chances, especially in the big games.
“If you’re contributing and having an effect on the game, you’re not a luxury player.
“If you’re not, then you become a luxury player. Ozil has created more chances than any other player in Europe over the last five seasons, but he needs to up his consistency.”
Arsenal signed Ozil in what was then a club-record £42.5m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the 2013 summer transfer window.
The German playmaker has won three FA Cup crowns during his stay at the north London club but is still waiting to taste Premier League glory.
