Pat Nevin explains why likes of Chelsea wouldn’t sign Mesut Ozil
The Chelsea legend doesn't believe any of Arsenal's title rivals would consider a move to sign Mesut Ozil
Pat Nevin doesn’t believe any of Arsenal’s title rivals would consider signing Mesut Ozil.
The Gunners playmaker was singled out for criticism after Arsenal suffered a 1-0 loss to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday evening.
BT Sport pundits Steven Gerrard and Martin Keown used Ozil as a scapegoat for the north London side’s first defeat of the 2017-18 Premier League campaign.
Ozil is no stranger to criticism and the World Cup winner has left many Premier League supporters unconvinced since his £42.5m move to Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013.
The Germany international has won the FA Cup three times in four seasons but the 28-year-old hasn’t helped the Gunners to get any closer to ending their Premier League title drought.
Ozil has entered the final 12 months of his current Arsenal deal and the former Schalke 04 midfielder hasn’t reached an agreement with the Gunners to extend his stay at The Emirates.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin doesn’t believe Ozil’s reputation would secure him a move to another Premier League club if the German star was to leave Arsenal.
“I don’t think other top four [Premier League] teams would break the bank to get Ozil,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“There is something missing when you compare him to the other guys. You wouldn’t have him in the team ahead of David Silva, Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas.
“His next move would be back to Europe which says something. He isn’t as useless as people suggest but as a Premier League player, there’s a problem.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a place in this term’s Champions League.
