Thierry Henry sends message to Arsenal striker about Alexandre Lacazette
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry warns Olivier Giroud will be Alexandre Lacazette's back-up at the Gunners
Thierry Henry has warned Olivier Giroud that he will be second-choice to Alexandre Lacazette at Arsenal next season.
The Gunners signed the France international in a club-record £52m deal from Lyon last month to bolster Arsene Wenger’s attacking options.
Lacazette moved to Arsenal after scoring an impressive 100 goals in 203 appearances for the French club since his debut in 2010.
The 26-year-old will compete with his compatriot Giroud for a starting spot in Wenger’s team for the 2016-17 Premier League season.
The former Lyon striker started Arsenal’s penalty shootout victory over Premier League champions Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley last weekend.
Former Arsenal striker Henry believes Lacazette will start ahead of Giroud despite the towering Gunners star being ahead of the summer signing in the pecking order in the France set-up.
“It’s a funny one for Olivier Giroud, because Lacazette is his back-up in the national team but it looks like he will be first choice at Arsenal,” Henry told Sky Sports.
“I don’t know how many times it has happened in history that two players have switched roles like that between national team and club.
“I’m not saying it is right or wrong but it is an interesting dynamic.”
Arsenal will start the new Premier League season with a home clash against Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.
The Gunners have signed Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04.
The north London side finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a place in the Champions League.
Arsenal won the FA Cup to finish the season on a high note with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea.
