Arsene Wenger makes plea to Arsenal fans after Chelsea win
Arsene Wenger sent an open message to Arsenal fans after his side's Community Shield win over Chelsea
Arsene Wenger has pleaded with Arsenal fans to be “united” behind his team this season as they look to win the Premier League title.
The Frenchman found himself under intense scrutiny last term as his side struggled to find consistent form in the top flight and eventually slumped to a fifth-placed finish.
There was constant uncertainty about Wenger’s future at the club as well, with the Arsenal boss only opting to sign a new two-year contract with the club after the season was over.
However, Arsenal did enjoy a positive end to the 2016-17 campaign as they beat Chelsea to win the FA Cup at Wembley.
Wenger watched his team secure victory over the Blues again on Sunday as Arsenal sealed a penalty shootout win over Chelsea in the Community Shield.
And looking ahead to the new season, Wenger was asked if he had a message for Arsenal fans, and he told BT Sport: “I would like that they [the fans] stand behind the team.
“We might go through some very good periods and some less good periods.
“We want to be united and together throughout the season – and hopefully we can make them happy at the end of the season.”
Arsenal now turn their attentions towards kicking off their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Leicester City at The Emirates on Friday night.
The Gunners have not won the Premier League since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 season.
