Steven Gerrard: This is what worries me about Mesut Ozil
Steven Gerrard admits that he was not impressed by Mesut Ozil's performance for Arsenal against Stoke
Steven Gerrard has admitted that was not impressed by Mesut Ozil’s display for Arsenal against Stoke City on Saturday.
The German playmaker was criticised for failing to do the hard work off the ball during the Gunners’ 1-0 loss to Stoke at the bet365 Stadium.
Arsenal, as is normally the case, enjoyed plenty of possession and created a number of good chances, but they failed to find a way past Jack Butland.
And the north London side were undone when both Ozil and Granit Xhaka were sloppy in possession during the second half, as Jese scored the only goal of the game.
Liverpool legend Gerrard pointed the finger at Ozil after the game and explained how he felt that the World Cup winner had let his team down.
Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Gerrard said: “We’ve all seen him [Ozil] on his day and he’s a world-class talent in possession, although he was poor in that respect today.
“I just worry about his body language and his reaction when the ball is turned over. He offers his teammates nothing away from defensively and away from home he’s a liability.
“Both his and Xhaka’s reaction in the build-up to the goal is weak. Ozil gives up and quits, he doesn’t track the run.”
Ozil will be hoping to step his game up when the north London side take on Liverpool in the Gunners’ next Premier League game at Anfield next weekend.
The World Cup winner’s future has bene a source of speculation this summer because he has entered into the final 12 months of his contract at the club.
