Nigel Winterburn has urged Arsene Wenger to do what he can to keep Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Arsenal beyond the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old midfielder’s situation has been a source of speculation in recent weeks because he has less than a year left on his current contract and he is yet to sign a new deal with the north London side.

It remains to be seen whether Oxlade-Chamberlain will sign a new contract with Arsenal and commit his future to the north London club.

The midfielder has started both of Arsenal’s Premier League games so far this season and he is a popular figure amongst Arsenal fans.

And former Arsenal defender Winterburn has highlighted Oxlade-Chamberlain as a key player that the Gunners must try and keep hold of this summer.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Wednesday morning, Winterburn said: “Everything coming out of Arsenal sounds like he’s resisting signing a new contract.

“Is that because he’s yet to be convinced he’s going to play a large amount of games?

“I absolutely say he’s a player who has made massive strides in the last season. At wing-back, I’d put him as Arsenal’s outstanding player.

“Is that a position he wants to play regular though? Or does he want to play in centre-midfield? Or does he want to play in a more advanced area in behind a main striker?

“That’s the position you have to look at in his general play. Then you have to look at the amount he’s being offered.

“Does he feel he’s being offered less than some of the other players in the team that he’s as important as?

“Since the end of last season his performances have been a very high level.

“He’s definitely a player that Arsenal need to keep.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain will be hoping to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action on Sunday with a crunch clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

The north London side, who finished fifth last season, are aiming to bounce back from the disappointment of their 1-0 loss to Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium last weekend.
