Club legend claims Mesut Ozil wants to leave Arsenal
Mesut Ozil wants to leave Arsenal, according to former Gunners defender Martin Keown
Mesut Ozil is not happy at Arsenal and wants to leave the club, according to Martin Keown.
The Germany playmaker received criticism for his performance during Arsenal’s disappointing 1-0 loss to Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday evening as the Gunners crashed to their first defeat of the campaign in just their second game.
Ozil’s future has been a source of speculation in recent months because his current contract is set to expire at the end of the season and he doesn’t appear to be close to signing a new deal.
Now, Arsenal legend Keown has claimed that Ozil wants to leave the club, but called on the 28-year-old World Cup winner to finish his Gunners career “gracefully” in the coming months.
Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, Keown said: “Ozil is an expensive luxury — but if he is not going to work hard out of possession then he must do so when he has the ball. Why isn’t he running at players with menace and asking questions of them?
“It’s not enough just to be out there — he needs to be controlling games.
“Ozil has not yet signed a contract so we must assume he does not want to be at the club.
“But if he is just trying to see out his time at Arsenal, that is going to be a long year for all involved. He must forget about himself, give his all for the fans and the club and then go gracefully.”
Arsenal must now dust themselves down as they prepare for their crunch trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
The north London side are aiming to win the Premier League title this season for the first time since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League and won the FA Cup last term, meaning they will have to settle for Europa League football this season.
