Steven Gerrard opens up about Granit Xhaka after Arsenal’s loss at Stoke
Steven Gerrard was not particularly impressed by Granit Xhaka or Mesut Ozil during Arsenal's 1-0 loss to Stoke City on Saturday
Steven Gerrard criticised both Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil after Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat by Stoke City in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Gunners suffered a disappointing defeat in their second game of the season as they were beaten at the bet365 Stadium.
Arsenal enjoyed plenty of possession and played some quick attacking football, but the north London side struggled to break down Mark Hughes’ side.
After a goalless first half, it was summer signing Jese who broke the deadlock with a neat finish past Petr Cech in the Arsenal goal.
Xhaka’s stray pass to Ozil was what gifted the home side possession in the lead-up to the goal at the bet365 Stadium.
And former Liverpool midfielder was less than impressed with Xhaka and Ozil’s play in the build-up to Stoke’s eventual winner.
Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Gerrard said: “Xhaka is in control of the ball and gives a sloppy pass to Ozil – and both of their reactions are weak.
“If you make a mistake in this area of the pitch, it’s all about your reaction.
“Ozil’s reaction is not good enough, Xhaka is weak and doesn’t fancy the tackle.”
Arsenal must now dust themselves down as they prepare for their crunch Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield next weekend as they look to get back to winning ways.
The north London side were hoping to challenge for the Premier League title this season after ending up in fifth place in the table last term.
