Steven Gerrard tells Arsene Wenger why Arsenal won’t win the league
Steven Gerrard delivers a damning verdict on Arsenal after the Gunners' 1-0 loss to Stoke City on Saturday
Steven Gerrard claimed that Arsenal have too many technical players in their starting 11 after the Gunners slumped to a disappointing 1-0 loss to Stoke City in their second Premier League game of the season on Saturday.
After a goalless first half, summer signing Jese broke the deadlock when he swept a neat finish past Petr Cech to put the home side ahead.
Arsenal had plenty of possession and chances but failed to find away past the inspired Jack Butland in the Stoke goal.
And former Liverpool captain Gerrard has delivered his honest verdict on what he thinks is wrong with Arsenal at present.
Speaking on BT Sport after the final whistle, Gerrard said: “The performance was typical Arsenal. Fantastic in possession.
“Yes, they had a lot of chances and on another day maybe could have scored a couple of goal.
“But they were just passive out of possession. There weren’t enough people wanting to put their bodies on the line, run back and rescue dangerous situations.
“It seems to me that Arsenal have good too many technical, gifted players in their 11.
“They need a couple of players in there with steel, aggression and who break it up and do the other side of the game.
“Otherwise, it’s just going to look nice. They’re going to have loads of possession and they’re going to have results like today.”
It remains to be seen whether Arsene Wenger will look to further strengthen his squad before the close of the summer transfer window at the end of the month.
The north London side have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 season.
Arsenal must now dust themselves down as they prepare for their crunch Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield next Sunday afternoon.
